ODM Women Raise Alarm Over Dirty Tricks to Block Rosemary Okuta From Vying for Nairobi Chairlady Position
Fresh wrangles have rocked the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) amid claims that powerful party insiders are plotting to alter the official delegates list in a bid to undermine Rosemary Okuta, a rising contender for the Nairobi Chairlady position.
In an internal communication seen by the press, party members accused a section of ODM officials of working in cahoots with insiders at the party headquarters to doctor the list of delegates that is already in the public domain.
The communication claims that the plan is being orchestrated with the involvement of senior officials, including those in charge of registration systems, allegedly in exchange for hefty payments. “Elections happened in all constituencies, and we have lists from polling stations to constituencies. If even a full stop is changed, we shall have a bone of contention with them,” the message reads.
Supporters of Rosemary Okuta, who has been gaining ground in Nairobi, now believe the move is meant to steal votes from her and weaken her candidacy. They have called on the party’s Executive Director to “take charge” and stop what they describe as a deliberate attempt to subvert grassroots democracy.
“The people of ODM are aware of this plan, and it will be met with total resistance,” the communication warned.
The alleged plot adds to growing pressure within ODM to ensure transparent grassroots elections as factions jostle for influence ahead of the party’s 20th anniversary.
