Incoming ODM Nairobi Chairlady Rosemary Okuta Backs Millie Odhiambo’s Push to Limit Nominations to Two Terms
Incoming Nairobi ODM Chairlady Rosemary Okuta has come out strongly in support of Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo’s plan to cap the number of times an individual can be nominated to Parliament.
Odhiambo, who is set to table a motion in Parliament, proposes that no one should hold a nominated position—whether as MCA, MP, or Senator—for more than two terms. She argues that the current system has been abused, allowing a few individuals to cling to political power without ever facing voters at the ballot.
“This is about fairness and accountability. Nomination should not be a lifetime privilege for a select few. It must open doors for new leaders, especially women and youth,” Odhiambo said.
Okuta echoed her sentiments, saying the reform would dismantle political cartels that have dominated nomination slots for decades. Her remarks are widely seen as a direct swipe at long-serving ODM nominated leaders such as Catherine Okoth, who has held the Nairobi ODM Chairlady seat for over 20 years while benefiting from repeated nominations.
“This motion is timely. It will end recycling of the same faces and give others a genuine chance to serve. Leadership is not inheritance,” Okuta declared.
The proposal is expected to trigger intense resistance from entrenched political figures who have thrived under the current unlimited nomination system. However, reformists within ODM insist the change is necessary to restore credibility and fairness in party politics.
