Rosemary Okuta-Catherine Okoth Rivalry Sparks Tension Ahead of ODM 20th Anniversary

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing growing internal turbulence just weeks before the party marks its 20th anniversary, raising concerns over unity during what was expected to be a moment of celebration.

Tensions within ODM’s Nairobi branch are said to be at the center of the storm, with accusations and counter-accusations emerging between Nairobi Chairlady Catherine Okoth and her critics, who are rallying behind Rosemary Okuta as a preferred alternative.

In particular, Nairobi women leaders allied to ODM are demanding fresh grassroots elections before the anniversary, accusing Okoth of sidelining them in decision-making. They argue that Rosemary Okuta represents a fresh start and should be given the mandate to steer women leadership in the capital.

“As Nairobi Women we have nothing to celebrate,we have bad leaders who have been ignoring us and we need new leadership,” said a Nairobi ODM supporter who requested anonymity.

Supporters of Rosemary Okuta accuse Chairlady Okoth of ignoring grassroots voices and making empty promises, while Okoth’s allies insist she remains a strong mobilizer who has defended the party faithfully. The standoff, however, has already spilled into public rallies and local meetings, threatening to overshadow the anniversary mood.

Observers warn that unless the disputes are managed swiftly, the internal wrangling could dent ODM’s image at a time when it seeks to project unity and renewal ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ODM anniversary, set to highlight two decades of the party’s role in Kenya’s political journey, now risks becoming a stage for internal power struggles rather than celebration.
