ODM Nairobi Women Turn Against Catherine Okoth, Demand End to 20-Year Reign
Nairobi, October 12, 2025 — Pressure is mounting on long-serving Nairobi ODM Women’s League Chairlady Catherine Okoth to step down, as party members intensify calls for fresh leadership and generational change within the Orange Democratic Movement’s women structures.
Okoth, who has led the women’s wing for nearly two decades, is facing a rising rebellion from within the party, with a section of women leaders accusing her of clinging to power and stifling new ideas.
Her critics argue that her prolonged stay in office has led to stagnation in women’s programs and weakened grassroots mobilization efforts. “Catherine has done her part, but 20 years is too long. We need vibrant, visionary, and inclusive leadership that can energize ODM women ahead of the 2027 elections,” said Rosemary Okuta, the incoming ODM Nairobi Chairlady and one of the leading voices pushing for change.
Supporters of the transition movement say they want to see the women’s league return to active grassroots engagement, mentorship, and empowerment programs for young women. They accuse Okoth of running a closed system that sidelines upcoming leaders and benefits only a select few.
Okoth, however, has remained silent amid the growing calls for her exit. Party insiders say she still enjoys support from a network of long-serving ODM officials who view her as a stabilizing force. Some reports suggest attempts are being made to influence upcoming party elections through manipulation of delegate lists — a move Okuta’s camp has vowed to resist.
“This is not a personal fight; it’s about the future of our movement,” Okuta stated. “We respect Catherine’s contribution, but leadership must evolve. We are ready to restore trust, transparency, and unity among Nairobi ODM women.”
The unfolding contest has exposed deep rifts within the party’s women’s wing and could test ODM’s commitment to internal democracy. Political observers say how the issue is handled will signal whether the party is ready to embrace renewal ahead of the next general election.
If Okoth steps down voluntarily, it could mark a peaceful transition and a rejuvenation of the Nairobi women’s league. But if she digs in, the battle for control may turn into one of the most defining internal contests in ODM’s recent history.
