Commissioner Michael Nzomo Calls for Collaboration and Equal Opportunities for Girls During Storytelling Forum

Nairobi, October 11, 2025 — National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Commissioner Michael Nzomo has called for stronger collaboration and continuous dialogue to empower girls and young women, particularly those from marginalized regions, as the world marked the International Day of the Girl.

Speaking during a storytelling forum organized to celebrate the day, Nzomo emphasized the need for regular conversations that address the real challenges girls face in different parts of the country — from urban centers to remote areas like Mandera.

> “We must have conversations at least twice a month, not just in privileged spaces like this room or on YouTube, but also in communities where girls face deeper struggles,” said Nzomo. “What happens to girls in Atlanta is very different from what happens to girls in Mandera or Turkana. We must bridge that gap.”

He noted that while some youth have access to opportunities and platforms for growth, many others are left behind due to systemic inequalities. Nzomo urged institutions, government agencies, and civil society organizations to work together in designing inclusive programs that reach every corner of the country.

> “We have to walk together and collaborate. Faith, culture, and tradition still hold many girls back. Let us open doors so that every young person can feel they belong,” he added.

The Commissioner reiterated NGEC’s commitment to championing gender equality and empowering girls to rise beyond cultural and economic barriers. He encouraged young women to use their voices and experiences to influence change within their families and communities.

The storytelling forum brought together girls from various counties, youth leaders, and gender advocates to share their personal stories and reflections under the theme “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being”.

Nzomo concluded his remarks by affirming NGEC’s pledge to continue supporting initiatives that create safe, inclusive spaces for girls to thrive and lead.
