Council of Governors Ousts Kahiga as Vice Chair Over Remarks on Raila Odinga’s Death
Nairobi, October 22, 2025 — The Council of Governors (CoG) has unanimously voted to remove Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga from his position as Vice Chair, following his controversial remarks made in Kikuyu language allegedly celebrating the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
In a special sitting convened at the Council’s headquarters, the governors resolved to pass a motion of no confidence in Kahiga, terming his comments as reckless, divisive, and unbecoming of a national leader.
The meeting was attended in person by CoG Chairperson and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdulahi, Tharaka Nithi Governor and Council Whip Muthomi Njuki, and Kericho Governor Dr. Eric Mutai, while other governors joined virtually.
Governor Abdulahi confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the Council does not condone any form of hate speech or ethnic incitement.
> “The Council of Governors wishes to distance itself from Governor Kahiga’s remarks. His statements do not in any way reflect the values, unity, and respect that the Council stands for,” Abdulahi said.
He further extended condolences on behalf of the Council to the family, friends, and supporters of the late Raila Odinga, describing him as a statesman who played a pivotal role in Kenya’s democratic journey.
Kahiga has faced widespread condemnation from leaders and citizens alike after a viral video surfaced online in which he appeared to suggest that Raila’s death was an act of divine intervention.
The Council’s decision marks a significant disciplinary step, underscoring its commitment to promoting responsible leadership and maintaining respect during a period of national mourning.
