Diaspora Recruiters Association Chairman Urges Stakeholders in the Recruitment and Migration Sectors to Collaborate to Support Kenyan Emigrants

By Jane Muthusi

Dr. Jotham Gichuhi, Chairman of the Diaspora Recruiters Association and Director at A&J Global Limited, a licensed recruitment firm, has called on stakeholders in the recruitment and migration sectors to enhance collaboration for better outcomes for Kenyan emigrants.

During a stakeholders' meeting convened by the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Labor and Social Protection, Dr. Alfred Mutua, in Nairobi, Dr. Gichuhi emphasized the importance of cooperation among state agencies involved in the migrant worker process. He highlighted the need for a seamless journey for migrant workers, particularly in addressing challenges faced by Kenyan nurses seeking employment in the United States.

Dr. Gichuhi urged the Kenyan government to negotiate for a special visa for Kenyan nurses aspiring to work in the U.S. to mitigate the current visa retrogression issues. "By strengthening these areas, we can better prepare our citizens for the challenges they may face abroad," he stated.

While appreciating the government's efforts in establishing an NCLEX testing center in Kenya, Dr. Gichuhi pointed out that this was only a partial solution given the growing number of nurses preparing for migration. He noted that the increasing enrollment of nurses in NCLEX tutorials at Tabor Training Institute signals a strong willingness among Kenyan nurses to expedite their journey to the U.S.

Addressing the challenges faced by nurses migrating to the Gulf region, Dr. Gichuhi explained that their journey is often prolonged due to the requirement to meet compliance standards, such as Prometric, Dataflow, and Mumaris, before departure. He urged the Cabinet Secretary to engage with relevant Gulf region authorities to allow Kenyan nurses to migrate and complete the necessary tests after induction in their respective hospitals.

Dr. Gichuhi also encouraged the Kenyan government to pursue more bilateral agreements with various countries to increase the number of migrant workers from Kenya.
