Stanchart Marathon: Kiptum and Rotich Win Top Titles as Nairobi Hosts Global Running Stars
Abraham Kiptum and Mercy Rotich emerged as the biggest winners at the 23rd Stanchart Marathon after claiming the men’s and women’s full marathon titles in Nairobi on Sunday.
The event attracted 30,700 runners representing more than 100 nationalities, including over 400 elite athletes, in a competition that combined professional athletics with mass participation.
Kiptum won the men’s 42km race, while Rotich took the women’s title. Nahason Kipsang and Orba Chemurgor won the men’s and women’s 21km half-marathon categories, respectively.
Alfred Kimani and Joy Cheptoyek emerged victorious in the 10km races, while Samuel Kuria and Mercyline Ajenjo claimed the men’s and women’s wheelchair race titles.
The marathon offered a total prize purse of Sh11.24 million, with the full marathon champions each earning Sh2 million. Winners in the half-marathon and wheelchair races received Sh300,000 each, while the 10km champions took home Sh200,000 apiece.
The event, staged along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass with views of Nairobi National Park, attracted record sponsorship worth Sh273 million.
Standard Chartered Kenya Chief Executive Officer Birju Sanghrajka said the marathon demonstrated how sport could bring people together while supporting lasting community development.
“This marathon brings the world to Nairobi and turns a shared passion for running into opportunities that last beyond race day,” Sanghrajka said.
Organisers said the event raised Sh76 million through registration fees, with all proceeds earmarked for community programmes supported by the Standard Chartered Foundation.
The funds will support initiatives designed to help young people gain education, develop employable skills and establish businesses, with particular attention to women and persons with disabilities.
The latest fundraising brings the marathon’s cumulative contributions since its inception to Sh596 million.
Organisers also introduced environmental measures, including giving every finisher a tree seedling as part of a target to plant 40,000 trees in partnership with Nairobi City County.
The marathon also featured 19 hydration stations, roaming bicycle medics and enhanced recovery services to improve the experience and safety of participants.
