Octagon Pension Fund Surpasses Market Average as Assets Reach KSh3.2 Billion
The Octagon Umbrella Retirement Benefits Scheme has grown its fund value to KSh3.2 billion after its aggressive investment portfolio delivered a 19.1 per cent return in 2025, outperforming the umbrella fund market average of 12.37 per cent.
The scheme's performance highlights the growing role of umbrella retirement arrangements in Kenya as employers seek cost-effective ways to manage staff pension benefits while providing workers with investment options.
According to Octagon Africa, the scheme's Balanced Fund returned 14.8 per cent, while its Conservative Fund recorded an 11.6 per cent return, with all three investment options posting positive results during the year.
“The growth of the Octagon Umbrella reflects the increasing importance of professionally managed retirement arrangements that give employers efficiency while providing members with investment choice and access to their retirement information,” said Michael Komen, Head of Retail at Octagon Africa.
The scheme's fund value rose from KSh2.9 billion in 2025 to KSh3.2 billion by March 2026, alongside a 22 per cent increase in membership. More than 200 employers were participating in the scheme as of March 2026.
Octagon offers three investment portfolios designed to accommodate members with different financial goals and risk appetites. The Conservative Fund focuses on stability through guaranteed funds, fixed-income securities and Treasury bills.
The Balanced Fund combines equities, bonds, cash equivalents and guaranteed funds, while the Aggressive Fund has greater exposure to equities, real estate investment trusts and private equity.
Komen said the scheme was focused on ensuring that investment growth translated into long-term financial security for members.
“Members now need solutions that combine disciplined investment, appropriate risk management, transparency and easy access to information,” he said.
The growth comes amid improved performance in Kenya's financial markets. Kenyan equities generated a 104 per cent return over the two years to June 2026, supported by strong corporate earnings and sustained participation by domestic investors.
Market analysts expect equities to remain supported by improving earnings and increased corporate activity, although geopolitical risks could trigger short-term volatility.
Octagon has also expanded access to retirement services through its Octagon Pension Administration System (OPAS), which enables members to access statements and update beneficiary information online. Employers can also post contributions and approve member requests digitally.
The wider retirement benefits industry has recorded significant growth. According to the Retirement Benefits Authority's June 2026 Industry Brief, pension assets under management increased by 12.66 per cent between December 2025 and June 2026, rising from KSh2.811 trillion to KSh3.167 trillion.
Over the 12 months to June 2026, pension assets grew by 25.13 per cent, equivalent to an increase of KSh636 billion.
The RBA has attributed part of the shift towards umbrella schemes to smaller standalone corporate pension schemes adopting pooled arrangements that reduce administrative demands and overhead costs while providing access to professional investment management.
