Kenya Courts Continental Influence as African Football Leaders Convene for FIFA Series

By Jane Muthusi

Kenya is stepping up its push to become a continental football powerhouse following a high-level meeting in Nairobi that brought together top African football leaders and global stakeholders.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya hosted members of the FIFA Council, alongside officials from CECAFA and COSAFA, as well as presidents of football federations from across the continent.

The meeting, held at Talanta Plaza, underscored growing confidence in Kenya’s ability to host major international tournaments, with Mvurya describing the gathering as a significant milestone in the country’s sports diplomacy efforts.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mvurya said the presence of top football decision-makers signals Kenya’s rising profile in global football and its readiness to stage world-class events, including the ongoing FIFA Series.

He noted that beyond hosting matches, Kenya is positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of football in Africa through strategic discussions and partnerships.

“AFCON 2027 presents a prime opportunity for Kenya and the region to showcase our immense potential, strengthen partnerships, and adopt global best practices in sports management, infrastructure, and talent development,” Mvurya said.

Kenya is set to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, a tournament the government views as a catalyst for transforming the country’s sports ecosystem and elevating its international standing.

During the visit, the delegation toured key stadiums and training facilities, where they commended ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at meeting international standards.

Mvurya said the improvements are part of a broader long-term strategy to nurture local talent while attracting global competitions.

The talks also focused on knowledge sharing and regional collaboration, with Kenya seeking to learn from more established football nations to strengthen its policies and systems.

In a major development, Mvurya revealed that Kenya is exploring plans to host a regional football federation headquarters in Nairobi.

Discussions are already underway, with technical teams working to meet the requirements needed to secure the bid—a move that could cement Nairobi’s position as a continental sports hub.

Meanwhile, excitement is building on the pitch as Harambee Stars prepare to take part in the FIFA Series matches. The tournament marks a historic moment as Kenya hosts the series for the first time, further boosting its credentials on the global stage.

Mvurya emphasized that continued collaboration with African and international partners will be critical as Kenya ramps up preparations for AFCON 2027, expressing confidence that the country will deliver a successful and memorable tournament.
