Government Spokesperson Issues Flood Alert as Dam Levels Rise Across Tana Basin

The government has raised concern over increasing flood risks across the country as heavy rains continue to push water levels in key dams to critical points.

In a statement, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the ongoing rainfall has led to a sharp rise in water volumes along the Tana River cascade, forcing authorities to implement controlled water releases to protect dam infrastructure.

A fatal incident was reported in Roysambu Sub-County, Nairobi, where a woman believed to be about 29 years old was swept away by floodwaters on the night of April 28 near Turners Club in Zimmerman.

Although she was retrieved by members of the public, she had already died. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations processed the scene, and the body was taken to City Mortuary for identification and post-mortem examination. The case remains under investigation.

The government conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family and others affected by the ongoing floods.

Authorities also warned of heightened danger in downstream regions after Masinga Dam reached full capacity, triggering water discharge. Additional dams—Kamburu Dam, Gitaru Dam and Kindaruma Dam—are being closely regulated, while Kiambere Dam is expected to overflow within days due to continued inflows from the Aberdare and Mount Kenya catchment areas.

Residents in low-lying areas, particularly in Garissa County and Tana River County, have been advised to relocate to safer, higher ground as a precaution. The National Disaster Operation Centre is coordinating response efforts alongside other agencies to manage the situation.

In Nairobi’s Kasarani Sub-County, flooding has disrupted transport and affected dozens of households. The Street 13 bridge leading to Mwiki has been submerged by the Gatharaini River, rendering it impassable, while homes in Maanguo, Maternity, and Muirigo areas have been inundated.

Further flooding has been reported in Mwiki Location, with sections of the Nairobi River swelling but not yet breaching its banks. Emergency response teams, led by the Kenya Defence Forces, have been deployed to assist affected residents and manage the crisis.

The government has urged Kenyans to remain alert as rains persist, follow official advisories, and report emergencies promptly.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property through coordinated response measures during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.
