Kenya Declares November 7 as Mt. Elgon Day to Champion Ecosystem Restoration

Nairobi, Kenya, November 4, 2025 — The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has declared November 7 as Mt. Elgon Day to rally national and international stakeholders toward the restoration of the Mt. Elgon ecosystem — one of Kenya’s most critical water towers.

Speaking during a media breakfast on Mt. Elgon Restoration held in Nairobi, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah M. Barasa said the initiative marks a renewed national commitment to protect and restore the 103,000-hectare ecosystem that has suffered years of deforestation and unsustainable land use.

“Mount Elgon has suffered the effects of deforestation and unsustainable land use practices, leading to declining water levels and reduced ecosystem services — reminding us that the cost of environmental destruction is too high to bear,” Dr. Barasa said.

She noted that in 2023, UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) International Coordinating Council designated the Mount Elgon ecosystem as a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve — only the second of its kind in Africa. However, she cautioned that continued degradation could result in the loss of this global recognition.

As part of the restoration effort, the Ministry has appointed the Principal Secretary for Mining, Mr. Harry Kimtai, as the Patron and Champion for the Mt. Elgon Restoration Initiative. The programme aims to restore degraded forest cover, enhance community livelihoods, and promote sustainable use of natural resources.

The 10-year restoration plan aligns with President William Ruto’s directive to grow 15 billion trees by 2032, as well as the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP).

“This initiative seeks to foster collaboration, partnerships, and stakeholder coordination, while improving access to clean energy and water, promoting sustainable livelihoods through green jobs, and increasing awareness and conservation initiatives in schools and institutions of higher learning,” Dr. Barasa added.

The Ministry plans to integrate local communities, development partners, and conservation organizations in restoring forest cover, promoting research, technology, and innovation, and supporting youth participation through sports, culture, and environmental awareness programs.

Dr. Barasa concluded by calling on all Kenyans and partners to join hands in the restoration efforts, saying, “Let Mount Elgon rise again — green, vibrant, and full of life.”
