Nairobi West MCA Condemns Governor Sakaja Over Midnight Demolition in Langata
Nairobi West MCA Rex Omolleh has leveled serious accusations against Governor Johnson Sakaja following a midnight demolition in Langata that affected properties used by local Juakali and mama mbogas traders. The demolition, executed by city council officers, targeted traders who have held legal occupancy of the property since 2014, with proper documentation from Kenha and Nairobi City County.
During a press briefing, Omolleh expressed shock at the unannounced operation. “As the area MCA, I was not informed of the demolition which was conducted in the dead of night. I must ask: what was the intention behind this action?” he questioned. The MCA also revealed that 25 vehicles were confiscated by council officers, intensifying concerns over the treatment of local traders.
Criticizing what he described as mistreatment of hardworking hustlers, Omolleh accused Governor Sakaja of undermining community trust. “How can you aim to join ODM while actively mistreating our people?” he asserted. He urged the governor to visit Langata and provide assurances that the traders, who legally occupy the area, will not be displaced.
In a further call for intervention, Omolleh appealed to ODM leader Raila Odinga, emphasizing the need for fairness under the broad-based government arrangement. “We joined the broad-based government in the hope of better treatment for our people, yet less than a month later, they are suffering. I call on Baba to step in and ensure our people are treated justly,” he declared.
The controversy remains unresolved as both Governor Sakaja and ODM leadership have yet to offer formal responses, leaving the community and traders seeking clear explanations and a resolution to the mounting tensions.
