Private Security Sector Pays Tribute to Late PROSAK Secretary General Delano Kiilu

NAIROBI, Kenya – The private security industry and the wider security sector in Kenya have paid glowing tributes to the late Delano Kiilu, the Secretary General of the Protective and Safety Association of Kenya (PROSAK), who passed away on January 25, 2025, following a short illness.

In a heartfelt condolence message, the Chairman of the Protective Security Industry Association (PSIA), Mr. Cosmas Mutava, described Mr. Kiilu as a trailblazer in the security sector who had touched countless lives.

“On behalf of the Protective Security Industry Association, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family, relatives, and friends of Mr. Kiilu during this difficult time. His absence will be deeply felt, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of many. May cherished memories bring comfort and peace,” said Mr. Mutava.

Mr. Kiilu, a distinguished national security expert, made immense contributions to Kenya's security sector, particularly in counterterrorism efforts dating back to 1993.

Until his passing, Mr. Kiilu served as the Secretary General of PROSAK, where he championed safety initiatives in public transport and spearheaded the adoption of advanced security technologies in East Africa. He also held the position of Secretary General for the International Police Organization African Command.

With over 30 years of experience in leadership, management, and security, Mr. Kiilu played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of large-scale infrastructure, technology, and socio-economic transformation projects across Africa.

An alumnus of Strathmore Business School, Mr. Kiilu provided expert advisory services to governments and businesses, offering solutions to complex challenges in sectors such as investment, healthcare, and national security.

His remarkable contributions included designing the Safaricom Cloud, Africa’s largest telco cloud in 2009, and crafting the original architecture for Kenya’s Huduma Centres in 2011, which earned international recognition. He also worked with top global organizations like IBM, Hitachi Data Systems, Oracle, and Seven Seas Technologies, advising several African nations on national security strategies.

Mr. Kiilu's leadership extended beyond his professional accomplishments. He was instrumental in coordinating emergency responses during the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi and enhancing Kenya's national security structures after the 2013 Westgate Mall attack.

A visionary leader and counterterrorism trainer, Mr. Kiilu inspired thousands with his dedication and integrity. His efforts in training professionals in counterterrorism and the prevention of violent extremism have left an indelible mark on the security sector.

The legacy of Delano Kiilu will endure, reflecting his unwavering commitment to security, innovation, and service to the nation.
