WASWAK and KEWI Celebrate Certification of Water Operators Poised to Revolutionize Kenya’s Water Management
By Grace Mwende
In a significant step for Kenya’s water management, forty water treatment operators have been officially certified after completing an extensive training and international certification program. The certification ceremony, organized by the Water Sector Workers Association of Kenya (WASWAK) in collaboration with the KEWI Alumni Association, Water Professionals International, and Gamechangers Inc, celebrated the accomplishments of these professionals, who are now equipped to enhance water management and service delivery across the nation.
Speakers at the event emphasized the critical role these certified operators will play in the future of Kenya's water systems. “You now stand as certified professionals, ready to make a substantial impact in the sector,” one speaker noted, acknowledging the graduates’ dedication and passion for water conservation and management. This certification is seen as a major step forward in creating a more sustainable water future for the country.
The trainers who facilitated the program were also praised for their expertise and dedication. Their guidance was described as crucial in preparing the participants for the challenges ahead. “Your commitment has been instrumental in shaping the future leaders of water management,” one of the participants said, highlighting the trainers' efforts to foster sustainable practices within the sector.
This certification program, endorsed by Water Professionals International, prepares the certified operators to meet global standards. The forty graduates, selected from various water utilities across Kenya, now hold internationally recognized certifications, allowing them to work both locally and abroad. This development also supports the government’s efforts to secure international employment opportunities for Kenyan water professionals.
Kenya's water sector faces ongoing challenges, as demonstrated by recent incidents like the water contamination case at Mukumu Girls High School. This certification initiative aims to address such issues, ensuring higher water quality and better service delivery. With their new qualifications, the graduates are well-positioned to implement solutions and improve water management practices.
The program’s organizers encouraged the graduates to continue using the knowledge and connections gained throughout the training. They emphasized that this milestone is only the beginning of a journey toward transforming water management in Kenya. Graduates were urged to act as ambassadors for the initiative, advocating for the importance of professional certification and sustainable water practices both within Kenya and on the international stage.
“This certification is not just a qualification, but a unique opportunity to lead a movement in how we manage and conserve water,” said a graduate. With the successful completion of this program, Kenya is taking a vital step toward advancing water conservation and service quality, empowering a new generation of professionals dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s water resources.
