PS Raymond Omollo Launches Regional Initiative to Combat Violent Extremism in East Africa
Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary at the State Department of Internal Security and National Administration, has launched a major initiative aimed at promoting peace and countering violent extremism in East Africa.
The official launch of the Regional Programme on Peace Building and Preventing Violent Extremism took place at Kwetu, Nairobi, with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE).
The programme's goal is to address the root causes of extremism, foster peaceful coexistence, and strengthen regional stability. Dr. Omollo emphasized the importance of cooperation among partner organizations in tackling these challenges.
A central focus of the new initiative is youth unemployment, which Dr. Omollo identified as a major factor contributing to the rise of extremism in the region. "One of the main causes of violent extremism is youth unemployment," he stated, stressing the need for economic empowerment to counter the lure of extremist ideologies.
The programme will concentrate on creating jobs, building resilient communities, and developing local capacity to challenge extremist narratives. It aims to support inclusive development, uplifting marginalized groups and providing alternatives to radicalization.
Dr. Omollo expressed optimism, calling the launch a key step toward a peaceful and secure East Africa. "By tackling the socioeconomic issues that drive extremism, we are securing a better future for the region," he said.
This initiative marks the beginning of a comprehensive effort to promote peace and stability across East Africa, with the backing of local and international partners.
