Kenya National Private Security SG Isaac Andabwa Warns Private Security Firms Exploitation their Workers

By Grace Mwende
Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNSWU) Secretary General (OGW) Isaac Andabwa has condemned private security firms for exploiting security guards working under them.

Andabwa expressed support for Public Security Regulatory Authority(PSRA) chairman Fazul Mahamed's move to cancel the license of 9 Security firms that did not comply with the Authority's regulations.
According to Andabwa, it is unfortunate that most of the lowly paid workers cannot afford goods and services because what they get is what they term ‘mockery.’

Speaking to Opera News at a Nairobi hotel, Andabwa said the private security guards have faced challenges in terms of minimum wages, and an unfriendly working environment.

"The 2018 minimum wage has never been implemented five years down the line. What we are asking is what was awarded to the workers who will be beneficial to workers who are currently surviving since they cannot afford the current cost of living," Andabwa said.

He said most guards feel neglected as they lack uniforms, insurance, and Medical cover.
According to Andabwa, these firms do not allow their employees to join the Union and hence have no avenues to demand rights which he terms as violations of human rights.

"How can a private security officer survive on a Ksh.10,000 in Nairobi?" Andabwa asked, Fazul is performing well in effecting the laws and regulations of private security guards Andabwa added.

Andabwa said the Private Security Industry who are hustlers still have hope the government will save the situation of the suffering workers as it will assist Kenyans who are straining and stressed.

"Some of the challenges in the private security sector and industry are difficult clientele, long working hours, limited social life and low wages,".
