Karura Race Brings Together Over 1,000 Runners Ahead of Nairobi Marathon

More than 1,000 runners gathered at Karura Forest on Sunday for the Friends of Karura Anniversary Race, adding momentum to preparations for the 23rd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

The event featured 21km, 10km, 5km and 2km races, attracting runners, families and members of the community for a day centred on athletics, fitness and environmental conservation.

Participants later joined a family-friendly celebration and a Berlin Marathon watch party at Amani Gardens.

The Karura race is part of a series of preparatory events supported by Standard Chartered ahead of the Nairobi Marathon, which is scheduled for October 25 at Uhuru Gardens.

Standard Chartered Bank Kenya and Africa Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing Joyce Kibe said the warm-up events are designed to give runners an opportunity to assess their preparation ahead of the main race.

“The warm-up races are an important part of the journey towards the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, giving runners an opportunity to test their preparation, build confidence and connect with fellow participants ahead of the main race,” Kibe said.

Kibe said the turnout at Karura demonstrated how sporting events can bring people together while supporting causes such as environmental conservation.

Friends of Karura Anniversary Race Operations Manager Peter Njui said the organisers appreciate Standard Chartered's continued support of the running community.

He said the event also helped highlight conservation work at Karura Forest, which is being protected and preserved through collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service.

The Nairobi Marathon has attracted participants from across the world over the years. This year's edition is expected to bring together more than 30,000 runners from 102 nationalities, including over 400 elite athletes.

Runners from Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania, Brazil and Ethiopia are among those expected to compete.

Since its inception, the marathon has attracted more than 345,000 participants and generated approximately Sh520 million for programmes supported through the Standard Chartered Foundation.

The initiatives support employability, entrepreneurship and skills development for young people, women and people with disabilities.

The 2026 edition has secured a record Sh273 million in combined sponsorship and support. Standard Chartered has contributed Sh130 million, while other sponsors have committed Sh143 million in cash and in-kind support.

The 23rd Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon will be held at Uhuru Gardens on October 25.
