Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura Speaks After Deadly Fire Tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy

The Government has expressed sorrow following a deadly fire outbreak at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where several students are feared dead while others sustained injuries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura described the incident as heartbreaking and devastating to the country.

“The Government has received with deep shock and profound sadness reports of a tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil,” Mwaura said.

He conveyed condolences to families, parents, teachers, and students affected by the tragedy on behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya.

Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the school following the incident, with officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, county disaster response units, firefighters, and medical personnel joining rescue operations.

According to the Government, injured students were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment as authorities continued efforts to account for all learners.

“The injured students are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities, while every effort is being made to account for all learners and ensure their safety,” Mwaura stated.

The Government assured the public that all available resources had been mobilized to handle the emergency and support affected families.

Officials from different Government agencies were already at the scene coordinating rescue efforts and investigations into the cause of the fire.

At the same time, Kenyans were urged to avoid sharing unverified information or graphic images related to the tragedy on social media.

“The Government urges members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or disturbing images online, as this may cause additional trauma to affected families,” Mwaura said.

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration are now working together with relevant agencies to establish the circumstances that led to the fire.

Mwaura said the country stands united with the students, teachers, and families affected as investigations and rescue operations continue.

Further updates, he added, will be issued through official Government communication channels once verified information becomes available.
