Expert Explains Sudanese Peace Conference as Turning Point for Unity and Prosperity

February 18, 2025 – Experts, political leaders, and representatives from various organizations have gathered at the Ferris Peace Conference in a bid to shape Sudan’s future. Among the attendees is Dr. Joe Herbishop, a conflict resolution expert and national figure, who believes the conference marks a turning point in Sudanese history.

The conference brings together political parties, movements, native organizations, and traditional leaders, all united under a shared vision of peace, unity, and prosperity. According to Dr. Herbishop, a key focus of the gathering is to establish a constitutional framework that will guide the peace process and ensure equal opportunities for all Sudanese people.

“The first step is to agree on a consensus-based constitution that will govern the peace process and social fabric of Sudan’s diverse communities,” Dr. Herbishop said. “From there, we will work to form a government of unity, known as the Peace and Unity Government.”

The initiative comes amid ongoing tensions with Sudan’s current leadership, which has rejected multiple peace efforts, including those led by the African Union, the European Union, and Geneva-based organizations. The government in Port Sudan has instead relied on military force to address conflicts, a strategy that has led to prolonged violence and division in the country.

Dr. Herbishop warned that continued conflict could lead to further fragmentation of Sudan, similar to the secession of South Sudan in 2011. He stressed that the conference seeks to prevent such an outcome by creating an inclusive political system that eliminates discrimination and ensures equality for all citizens.

The conference, which began earlier this month, is set to conclude on February 21 with the signing of a political declaration and a new constitution. These documents will lay the groundwork for a new political alliance aimed at leading Sudan toward stability and peace.

When asked about the potential attendance of General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at the signing ceremony, Dr. Herbishop responded, “More probably, yes.”

The outcome of this conference could have significant implications for Sudan’s future governance, as the push for a unified and peaceful nation faces resistance from the existing administration. The world will be watching as Sudanese leaders take a crucial step toward ending decades of internal conflict.
