KFCB Holds Film and Arts Empowerment Forum in Kirinyaga County

Hundreds of creatives and stakeholders gathered for the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Programme (CAFIL) – Kirinyaga Edition, held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Abai Lodges and Spa.

The CAFIL Programme, spearheaded by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) in partnership with the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund (SASDF), seeks to promote film literacy while encouraging responsible content creation.

The forum brought together filmmakers, actors, musicians, visual artists, and key players in the creative industry. It provided a valuable platform for participants to exchange ideas, address challenges facing local creatives, and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth in the film and arts sectors.

KFCB Acting CEO Mr. Paskal Opiyo, speaking at the event, emphasized the programme's role in fostering content that reflects Kenya’s cultural values and national aspirations while safeguarding minors and vulnerable groups from harmful material.

“This programme is aligned with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and Vision 2030, focusing on youth empowerment and economic development through the arts,” Mr. Opiyo noted.

He added that the initiative equips creatives with legal, ethical, and technological knowledge critical for advancing content creation and promoting collaboration and innovation within the sector.

The CAFIL initiative has already been successfully rolled out in regions such as Nairobi, Machakos, Kisumu, Nakuru, Embu, Mombasa, and Kirinyaga, with plans to expand to Kakamega and other parts of the country.

Earlier, during a similar forum in Machakos, representatives from key agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Immigration Department, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), and the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) presented insights on their mandates and their impact on the film industry.

The CAFIL Programme continues to play a vital role in empowering Kenya’s creative community, addressing industry challenges, and fostering sustainable growth through education and collaboration.
