Faith Odhiambo Demands Accountability in Kenya’s Judiciary and Police Service
December 24, 2024 – Nairobi, Kenya
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), led by its President, Faith Odhiambo, has called for urgent reforms and accountability within the Judiciary and the National Police Service. This follows what the Society describes as a growing culture of impunity and human rights violations by state institutions.
In a press statement, President Odhiambo condemned recent incidents, including the alleged abduction of two Kenyans, Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti, on December 21, 2024. The two men were reportedly taken by police officers, a violation of constitutional guarantees under Article 49, which protects the rights of arrested persons.
“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti or their presentation in court to face lawful charges. These abductions are in direct violation of the Constitution,” stated Ms. Odhiambo.
The LSK also criticized the state of the Judiciary, accusing it of compromising its independence and integrity for personal and financial gain. The Society emphasized the need for a "radical surgery" to restore public trust and ensure the Judiciary serves as a pillar of justice.
“To restore constitutional order, a systemic clean-up of the Judiciary is imperative. We cannot allow judicial officers to prioritize wealth creation over justice,” Odhiambo said.
To combat judicial misconduct and corruption, the LSK has invited Kenyans to submit evidence or information via dedicated email addresses. The Society also announced plans to open offices for receiving complaints starting January 2025.
This bold move marks the LSK’s renewed commitment to promoting transparency and justice as the year draws to a close. President Odhiambo urged citizens and stakeholders to join in the fight to uphold the rule of law.
“The Judiciary is the hope of our nation. Transforming it into a bastion of integrity and fairness is a collective responsibility that cannot wait,” she concluded.
