NCCK Advocates for National Unity and Youth Empowerment Amid Political Unrest

BY BRUNO AERO

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called for a comprehensive national reformation and a focus on youth empowerment after a two-day statutory meeting at Jumuia Conference and Country Home, Limuru.

The NCCK's Executive Committee emphasized the need to redefine Kenya’s identity, values, and future, particularly in light of the controversial Finance Bill 2024 and recent incidents of police brutality during demonstrations.

During this meeting, the NCCK met with President William Ruto to voice their concerns about the government's handling of public dissent. President Ruto promised to withdraw the Finance Bill 2024, halt police brutality, and avoid deploying the military. The NCCK has shared their memorandum with the President, stressing the importance of inclusive governance.

Focusing on Kenya’s Youthful Population

The NCCK highlighted that 79% of Kenya’s population is under 35, drawing attention to the severe lack of education, skills, and employment opportunities for the youth. They warned that if these issues are not addressed, there is a high risk of social instability. The NCCK committed to several initiatives:

Creating Centers of Excellence:*These centers will offer skills and opportunities for dignified livelihoods and community resilience.

Developing Youth-Led Programs:*Member churches will create programs that focus on youth leadership and involvement.

Organizing Economic Forums:*These local forums will address national economic challenges and seek solutions for a better future.

*Reviewing Budgets:* Increasing resources for youth programs within churches.

*Building Capacity:* Enhancing citizen participation and public accountability through training efforts.

Emphasizing the Importance of Public Opinion

The NCCK expressed profound sadness over the deaths caused by police actions during peaceful demonstrations. They condemned the police brutality and criticized Members of Parliament for passing the Finance Bill 2024 against public opinion. The NCCK called for a special parliamentary session to repeal the bill in response to the President's memorandum.

Urging an End to Violence

The NCCK demanded that the government respect the right to peaceful protest and release all youths arrested during demonstrations. They condemned the deployment of the military in Nairobi, insisting on adherence to court orders and lawful conduct. The NCCK announced a seven-day mourning period starting June 28 to honor those who died while exercising their right to protest.

 Calling for Electoral Reforms

To ensure a fair electoral process, the NCCK urged President Ruto and relevant stakeholders to expedite the appointment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners. The NCCK stressed the need for a timely boundary review process.

The NCCK's call for action is a significant step towards national unity and progress. They urged all Kenyans to contribute to building a just, peaceful, and prosperous nation, aligning with the ideals of the national anthem.
