MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua Pays Artistes Royalties Worth 20 Million Kenya Shilling

The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua yesterday led royalties distribution worth 20 million to artistes for the first Quarter of 2024 at Safari Park hotel.

The event brought together top musicians from all the regions in Kenya as well as representatives of the Departmental Committee of Parliament in charge of Sports, Culture and Heritage, Ministry of Gender, Culture, Heritage and the Arts, the Kenya Copyright Board and international organisations to which MCSK is affiliated.

Speaking during the event Mutua said that the society is working closely with the government through the Ministry of Arts and Culture to improve MCSK collections and improve members' welfare through training.

According to the CEO going forward royalties will be paid quarterly to ensure that artist are able to sustain themselves "The royalties payments for the 2nd quarter will come in April, the third quarter in August, and so forth," said Mutua. 

Among the top earners include Rueben Kigame, Marakwet Daughter ( Mali Safi Chito), Joseph Ngala, Stephen Kasolo, Praise Makena, Joseph Shisia Wasira who received over one hundred thousand shillings each.

With highest earner receiving over 700 thousand Kenyan shillings Mutua noted that artistes will no longer earn royalties in peanuts as witnessed before.

The CEO assured members that MCSK is back in business after facing several challenges in the past years, such as legal disputes, regulatory hurdles and piracy.

The CEO further encouraged members to update their records, including their KRA PIN, phone and account numbers, to get their payments in order to make process of easier.
