The Nairobi Hospital on Saturday 4th November 2023 held its annual Mommy and Baby Fair to raise awareness levels among the public on matters of pregnancy, labour and childbirth.

The forum which was open to both mothers and fathers aims to educate them on how to prepare for pregnancy, labour, childbirth and after delivery care.

The session which was led by experts from Nairobi Hospital focused on empowering and educating parents about pregnancy, options in labour and childbirth, lactation, immunization, free nanny training, Nutrition for mothers and Myths surrounding pregnancy and delivery.

Speaking during the fair, Nairobi Hospital CEO Mr James Nyamongo emphasized the importance of pregnant women receiving quality antenatal care.

According to Mr Nyamongo, the hospital has set aside a team of obstetricians and gynaecologists lined up to attend to mothers and their children on all weekdays in several outpatient clinics around Nairobi.

Mr Nyamongo noted that this program is one of the measures the hospital has put in place to support the government rolling out Universal Health Care across the country.

A report to the World Health Organization (WHO)the global maternal mortality ratio in 2020 was 223 per 100,000 live births. Almost 95 per cent of these maternal deaths occur in low and lower-middle-income countries with 70 per cent occurring in Sub-saharan Africa.

In Kenya, the maternal mortality ratio in 2020 was 530 per 100,000 live births which accounted for a 7.7 percent improvement from the year 2000 when it was 564 per 100,000 live births. The global maternal mortality ratio in 2020 was 223 per 100,000 live births,95 per cent of these maternal deaths occur in lower-middle-income countries with 70 per cent occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

However delay in deciding to seek healthcare, delay in reaching healthcare facility and delay in delivering quality healthcare at a facility continue to pose a great danger to preventable maternal deaths.
