Owalo Declares War on President Ruto as He Launches New Party for 2027
Former ICT Cabinet Secretary and former Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the President, Eliud Owalo, has officially launched the People's Prosperity Party (PPP) and declared his bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the unveiling of the party's headquarters, Ustawi House, in Nairobi on Wednesday, Owalo announced that he would contest the presidency on a PPP ticket after being endorsed as the party's flag bearer.
"I officially announce that I intend to seek the presidency of the Republic of Kenya on the People's Prosperity Party," Owalo said, expressing confidence that Kenyans would hand him victory in the August 2027 elections.
He said a PPP government would spearhead what he described as Kenya's "third liberation" through an economic revolution aimed at delivering prosperity to all citizens under the slogan Ustawi kwa Wote.
Owalo distanced himself from what he termed Kenya's "career political class," saying his presidential bid was intended to break away from politics as usual.
"I am seeking the presidency precisely to break from Kenya's business-as-usual career politics," he said, promising people-centred leadership anchored on the Constitution, good governance and the rule of law.
In a strongly worded address, the former Cabinet Secretary accused successive governments of failing ordinary Kenyans despite more than six decades of independence. He cited widespread poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, inequality and inadequate access to healthcare, clean water and decent housing as evidence that the country's economic model has failed.
Owalo argued that millions of hardworking Kenyans—including farmers, fishermen, artisans, factory workers and small-scale traders—remain poor because middlemen and politically connected elites capture most of the value generated by their labour.
He pledged that a PPP administration would reform Kenya's economic structure by empowering primary producers through investments in processing, storage, branding, value addition and market access, enabling them to earn a greater share of the wealth they create.
The former ICT CS also called for a broader national strategy to address economic marginalisation beyond the existing Equalisation Fund, saying sustainable prosperity would only be achieved through inclusive economic reforms that create jobs, expand access to credit and promote wealth creation across the country.
Owalo had previously announced his intention to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 presidential election, maintaining that his candidacy is independent and driven by a vision to transform Kenya. He has also previously urged President Ruto not to seek re-election and instead support his presidential bid.
