Agano Party Slams Police for Attacking Churches, Calls for Apology and Action
Agano National Party has condemned what it terms as a growing pattern of police brutality targeting churches and peaceful worshippers, warning that the actions threaten constitutional freedoms and Kenya’s democratic fabric.
In a press statement, the party’s Secretary General and Nairobi Senatorial aspirant, Hon. Odanga Pessa, cited recent incidents in which police officers allegedly teargassed church compounds and disrupted prayer services in parts of Nairobi and other urban centres.
According to the party, the operations exposed clergy, women, and children to teargas inside places of worship.
Pessa said the incidents constitute a direct violation of the Constitution, which safeguards freedom of worship, conscience, and peaceful assembly, and accused the security agencies of desecrating spaces meant for prayer, peace, and moral guidance.
“Churches are sanctuaries, not battlegrounds,” the statement read, warning that the use of force against religious institutions undermines public trust and the rule of law.
The party has now demanded a public apology from the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration to the affected churches and congregants.
It further called for immediate, transparent investigations into the conduct of the officers involved and disciplinary action against all those found responsible.
Agano National Party also urged the Interior Ministry to issue firm and binding directives to ensure places of worship are respected and protected from police aggression in future operations.
While reaffirming the importance of maintaining law and order, the party stressed that security operations must not be used to justify the violation of constitutional rights or the intimidation of religious institutions.
Agano, under the leadership of Chairperson Senior Counsel Wahiga Mwaure, said it stands with churches and Kenyans who seek peace, justice, and the freedom to worship without fear.
